Namun yang lebih berat lagi jika kesepian itu terasa sebagai kehampaan hidup karena seseorang yang sangat dekat dengan kita mendadak meninggal dunia. Perpisahan memang bisa meninggalkan bekas, apalagi bila perpisahan itu disebabkan oleh kematian. Seperti itu jugalah sayatan yang membekas dalam hati Joseph Medicott Scriven, pemuda Irlandia yang lahir pada tahun 1819 yang bertunangan dengan gadis idamannya. Selama 3 tahun mereka hidup dengan bahagia, menunggu dan mempersiapkan hari bahagia mereka. Namun maksud hati mereka tidak kesampaian. Beberapa hari menjelang pernikahan, musibah menimpa calon isteri Scriven yang tenggelam dan tewas. Karena kesedihannya, Scriven meninggalkan Irlandia dan juga ibunya pindah ke Kanada. Hari demi hari dilewati dengan rasa sepi dan sedih dengan kenangan akan tunangannya. Dalam kesendiriannya ia menulis sebuah lagu yang sekarang diterjemahkan dalam Bahasa Batak dalam Buku Ende (BE) 219 dengan judul ISE DO ALE-ALE TA dan dalam Bahasa Indonesia dalam Kidung Jemaat (KJ) 453 dengan judul Yesus Kawan Sejati. Demikian syair aslinya : What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and grief to bear. What a privilege to carry, everything to God in prayer O what peace we often forfeit, o what needles pain we bear. All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptation? is there trouble anywhere? We should not be discouraged take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrow share? Jesus knows our very weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precius Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer.
